After President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were revealed to have tested positive for COVID-19, reactions flowed out from all parts of America.

Our founder Sabrina said in an interview with Newsday, “I’m saddened and worried by the news that president Trump and the First Lady have been tested positive for the coronavirus. I hope they will have a speedy recovery and the White House can promptly and effectively initiate contact tracing to protect everyone else who may have been exposed. The country can’t thrive without a leader. Regardless of whether one likes or agrees with our president, for the sake of our country and the world, we wish that he will be OK. Additionally, I hope this prejudice towards Asian Americans doesn’t get worse and people don’t use this as an opportunity to further incite hatred and violence against Asian Americans.”

Vice President Mike Pence gave a hopeful message, stating that “Karen [Pence] and I send our love and prayers to our dear friends President [Trump] and Melania Trump. We join millions across America praying for their full and swift recovery. God bless you President Trump & our wonderful First Lady Melania.” Similarly, Democratic candidate and former Vice President Joe Biden tweeted, “Jill [Biden] and I send our thoughts to President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump for a swift recovery. We will continue to pray for the health and safety of the president and his family.”

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi took a more critical tone, but still offered her condolences, telling MSNBC, “This is tragic. It’s very sad. ... Going into crowds unmasked and all the rest was sort of a brazen invitation for something like this to happen.”

Sabrina's Full Statement Below:

"I’m saddened and worried by the news that president Trump and the First Lady have been tested positive for the coronavirus. I hope they will have a speedy recovery and the White House administration can promptly and effectively initiate contact tracing to protect everyone else who may have been exposed. I’m worried that many others have already been infected because I see on the news many people come into contact with President Trump, especially White House officials and tens of thousands of people in his campaign rallies. Majorities of them are seen not masking or distancing. Even though I’m sure our President has access to the best doctors in the world and probably the best COVID treatment, I’m still worried because he is 74 years old and obese, and I’m not sure he will listen to the doctors. So I hope this is a time his family and close friends will stand by him and give him the best care and support.

A country can’t thrive without a leader and I hope regardless of whether one likes or agrees with our president, for the sake of our country and the world, we wish he will be okay and his family can come though okay on the other side. I also hope President Trump can use this opportunity to tell the country, especially millions of his supporters, to wear masks and observe social distancing to protect themselves and others. Because they need to hear that from him and I feel after what has happened, it’s also his obligation, and his administration’s responsibility to warn the Americans people that COVID doesn’t care who you are.

I think politically, our president’s reputation is incredibly damaged by this sad news. But I hope he not only will stay strong for the sake of our country but use this opportunity to truly show all Americans that COVID is real and our common enemy, but also that if we stay strong and resilient, we can beat it and it starts with him listening to his doctors and scientists. Additionally, as a Chinese American seeing the recent months’ of escalation of anti-Asian biases and even physical assaults, I hope this prejudice towards Asian Americans doesn’t get worse and people don’t use this as an opportunity to further incite hatred and violence against Asian Americans."
